Firecracker in Production Rust: Architecture & Open Roles

Minimalist Rust KVM Virtual Machine Monitor (VMM) for microVMs

1. Why Teams Deploy Firecracker

Open-sourced by AWS in Rust to power AWS Lambda and Fargate, Firecracker (and the broader `rust-vmm` crate collection) stripped QEMU's legacy device emulation down to the bare minimum needed to boot modern Linux kernels. Today, Firecracker and `rust-vmm` power serverless GPU/AI code sandboxes at Modal, Fly.io Machines, Shuttle, and E2B.

2. Firecracker Kernel & Memory Internals

Firecracker interacts directly with the Linux kernel `/dev/kvm` ioctl API to configure vCPUs and guest physical memory slots, emulating only `virtio-net`, `virtio-block`, `virtio-vsock`, and a minimal serial console. To achieve sub-50ms warm starts for AI agents or serverless functions, platforms snapshot a running microVM's memory and restore it lazily across nodes using Linux `userfaultfd` page-fault handlers.

3. Firecracker Interview & Hiring Bar

Cloud compute and virtualization teams pay $195k to $280k for engineers skilled in KVM ioctls, `virtio` ring queues (`vhost-user`), `seccomp` syscall filters, and snapshot restore pipelines.
