Inside the Stack (Firecracker / io_uring / Tokio)
Modal Labs runs Rust where garbage pauses and unpredictable memory growth are unacceptable. Modal's container worker daemon is written from scratch in Rust, bypassing Docker and containerd to boot multi-gigabyte PyTorch/CUDA environments in under 400ms via lazy page-fault streaming over NVMe-oF.
Core Challenges on Your Plate
- Optimize Linux cgroups v2 isolation, FUSE page-cache prefetching, and snapshot memory restoration across thousands of H100 nodes.
- Scale internal components leveraging Firecracker, io_uring, Tokio, Tonic, eBPF while keeping binary compile times and memory RSS tight.
- Instrument p99.9 latency metrics and lead root-cause incident analyses across distributed clusters.
Requirements & Verified Salary Band
- Deep familiarity with idiomatic Rust, async execution models, and systems debugging tools (`gdb`, `perf`, `ebpf`).
- Prior ownership of production storage engines, compilers, network proxies, or cryptographic runtimes.
- Base salary: $190,000 to $260,000 USD + equity. Location: US / Americas Remote.
