Container Runtime Architecture at Modal
Serverless GPU computing requires instant container startup times. Modal eliminates cold-start penalties by provisioning lightweight container sandboxes directly through custom Linux kernel primitives and user-space Rust supervisors. Traditional Docker bridges add overhead. Our dataplane routes network packets and shared file mounts through zero-copy ring buffers, bypassing generic virtualization layers. Fast memory snapshots allow suspended containers to resume execution in tens of milliseconds.
Forward deployed systems engineers debug complex execution environments directly alongside AI infrastructure customers. Annual base compensation ranges from $180,000 to $240,000 USD plus equity.
What You Will Work On
- Profile container start times, identifying filesystem overhead, rootfs mount bottlenecks, and GPU driver initialization delays.
- Collaborate on custom Rust container supervisors interfacing with Linux cgroups v2, namespaces, and seccomp filters.
- Troubleshoot CUDA memory leaks, PCIe bandwidth contention, and asynchronous file transfers across distributed worker pools.
- Improve kernel tracing pipelines using eBPF and bpftrace to verify strict tenant isolation.
Skills and Experience
- Strong software engineering background in Rust, C, or modern systems programming languages on Linux.
- Familiarity with container runtimes (runc, crun, gVisor) or virtualization monitors (Firecracker, KVM).
- Strong communication skills debugging production systems live with enterprise engineering teams.
- Disclosed band: $180,000 to $240,000 USD base salary plus meaningful equity ownership.
