Staff Rust Compiler & Incremental Build Engine Engineer (Turbopack)

Vercel • 📍 US / EU Remote • $205k - $280k USD

Inside the Stack (Serde / Wasmtime / Tokio)

Vercel runs Rust where garbage pauses and unpredictable memory growth are unacceptable. Turbopack uses a fine-grained reactive demand-driven computation graph in Rust (`turbo-tasks`) with zero-copy persistent caching to bundle 50,000+ modules in milliseconds.

Core Challenges on Your Plate

  • Optimize whole-program dead-code elimination (tree shaking), reduce persistent cache serialization overhead, and maintain SWC ECMAScript parsers.
  • Scale internal components leveraging Serde, Wasmtime, Tokio, Hyper, io_uring while keeping binary compile times and memory RSS tight.
  • Instrument p99.9 latency metrics and lead root-cause incident analyses across distributed clusters.

Requirements & Verified Salary Band

  • Deep familiarity with idiomatic Rust, async execution models, and systems debugging tools (`gdb`, `perf`, `ebpf`).
  • Prior ownership of production storage engines, compilers, network proxies, or cryptographic runtimes.
  • Base salary: $205,000 to $280,000 USD + equity. Location: US / EU Remote.
