Inside the Stack (Tokio / QUIC / eBPF)
Discord runs Rust where garbage pauses and unpredictable memory growth are unacceptable. Our Rust SFU (Selective Forwarding Unit) and edge packet routers use recvmmsg/sendmmsg batching, custom congestion control, and eBPF XDP packet filtering.
Core Challenges on Your Plate
- Maintain the open-source DAVE (Messaging Layer Security) Rust crypto protocol, reduce voice packet jitter, and scale Tokio UDP relays.
- Scale internal components leveraging Tokio, QUIC, eBPF, rustls, Prost while keeping binary compile times and memory RSS tight.
- Instrument p99.9 latency metrics and lead root-cause incident analyses across distributed clusters.
Requirements & Verified Salary Band
- Deep familiarity with idiomatic Rust, async execution models, and systems debugging tools (`gdb`, `perf`, `ebpf`).
- Prior ownership of production storage engines, compilers, network proxies, or cryptographic runtimes.
- Base salary: $200,000 to $270,000 USD + equity. Location: US Remote.
